Anna Sofia Botkin and Elizabeth Botkin were 15 and 17 when they started writing So Much More, a book about being a stay-at-home daughter. In 2005, when the book was published, they were 17 and 19. Two young girls were tasked with teaching other girls their role in evangelical Christianity if they had not found a husband yet.
Whatever your feelings are about this apology are valid. You are not obligated to forgive someone just because they apologize. Should the powers that be have pushed these young girls to be the mouthpiece of the movement when they were not old enough to even have fully formed frontal lobes?
Although the sisters are accountable for promoting this harmful teaching for 20+ years. They do not bear the full responsibility. They were raised under a leader of Vision Forum. They grew up in this high-control environment and did not have enough life experience to know what they believed on their own.
I feel this needs to be approached with nuance, and give yourself time to process what this means to you.
Umbrella Rebellion is a podcast where we share our experiences in the ATI/IBLP and fundamentalist cults. We are on a journey of healing and exposing the teachings that lead to and justify abuse. It is our hope that those who are experiencing abuse can find support and escape from it.
